Meeting with EDC

Wow! sorry, I know I say that often but there really is no other word that I know of in English, quite like it …lol

so, WOW! I met with Dave of the EDC this afternoon. I had made the appointment hoping that he could be of assistance to me in writing my cover letter for Second Story Press. This was definitely a good choice. I have not had many opportunities to speak with him (or rather hear him speak) and so it was interesting to finally know a little about him (EDC is so important to our community and it is comforting to know the people there are so competent).

I am a little bummed out as I had somehow convinced myself that I would be leaving with a finished letter and at least one more thing checked off of my list of things to do for our book collection and this is not the case. A great deal of progress was made however and I am really excited about the quality/relevance of cover letter that I will be sending when it is completed. Dave seems to have a great deal of insight, experience, knowledge in spite of his telling me he never wrote (or even help someone) to a publisher before. That didn’t matter when it came down to it as what I really need to send Second Story is a sales pitch and he did have a lot to offer for that. It’s funny because a lot of what he was saying sounded familiar, like the advice I have given people when doing their resume but somehow I couldn’t get passed my own nervousness about approaching a publisher for the collection. It is just so important that they want the collection and that I get some kind of contract for it. It is very intimidating to have so much riding on a project. I have never been frightened, not when contacting editors, not about speaking to national magazines about payment details for my articles/photographs, not about pitching ideas to politicians, but this – whoa, it’s a whole different situation. As I said I think it is the importance of this project and what being accepted by Second Story could mean for our family that leaves me feeling inept and fearful.

I am really excited about the amount of research I now have to do before returning to see Dave, hopefully with a cover letter very near complete. Research has always been one of my strong points and something I love doing which is encouraging – to be at a point where my skills should be closer to adequate. I took a ton of notes while Dave was speaking, he is a good teacher, having a talent for explaining why things are necessary or how they are relevant to a project so that I will now be able to take those notes, plus those that he jotted down and move forward at a decent pace.

I want to be working on the photography for one of our next books next week as well as finding the information necessary to contact one of the (not sure how many there are) women police officers @ Marathon/Manitouwadge Detachment of the OPP as well as drafting an outline for Emeraude Exploring: Police.  I also need to do some research regarding ‘factories’ in our area (hopefully no further than Thunder Bay or SSMarie will be needed – Emeraude requested we add that visit to this collection and so it is very important.

Ideas regarding a factory that would be of interest to children (ages 2-6) that can be found in our area and where a prominent female is employed are welcome!

Please pray that we are successful with this book collection (more specifically that I finish and send our manuscript/proposal asap!)
