Deep Fryer fire in Manitouwadge

Manitouwadge Volunteer Firefighters responded to a call on Graham Road Sunday after the oil in an outdoor deep fryer spilled over causing the device to catch on fire. The homeowner who had been frying fish for their family, was quick to call for help and Manitouwadge Fire Department volunteers responded immediately. Fire Chief Owen Cranney was happy to report that there were no serious injuries as a result of the incident however he took the opportunity to remind people that summer cookouts can quickly take a turn for the worse even when precautions are taken. Cranney explained that it is very important to follow all manufacturers directions when using deep fryers stressing the importance of having them set-up on a flat, level surface, clear of any trees or flammable materials for at least ten feet in all directions, that children or pets be kept away from the cooking area, that a suitable thermometer be in the oil at all times as temperatures can rise very quickly and should not be allowed to go over 350oC as oil can ignite at 375oC and that these devices should be attended by an adult at all times. The homeowners preferred not to be named but did have this to say “We are thankful for how fast the firefighters’ arrived; they diffused the situation so quickly, they were great”.
