Senior double header at Manitouwadge High School

Wolverines vs. Falcons in Senior double header

by Karina Hunter

8835 01_01_2000The Marathon High School junior and senior boys volleyball and junior and senior girls basketball traveled to Manitouwadge Wednesday, October 14th for a North Superior Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA) sanctioned senior double header. What is a double header? Well, that just means that each of the senior teams was playing two games. What is the relevance of it being NSSSAA sanctioned? That means these continue to be games which are tallied to decide which Northshore teams will be playing in the NSSSAA semi-finals; at the junior level the NSSSAA banner is taken by the top team; for seniors NSSSAA is just a stepping stone; winning there leads them to compete in the North Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (NWOSSSAA) playoffs and then finally for a provincial title from the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations (OFSAA).

8831 01_01_2000Manitouwadge High School’s Wolverines Junior Boys continue to be on a winning streak as they were victorious against Marathon High School‘s Falcons yesterday taking the 3 sets 25-7, 25-8, and 15-7 respectively.

Junior Girls Basketball was well played, the Falcons winning against the Wolverines 21 – 13.  Manitouwadge seniors were on the top of their game as the Senior Boys and Senior Girls Wolverines each won both games played against the Falcons. In spite of the Falcons Senior boys seemingly trying to close the gap in the afternoon it just wasn’t enough in the end as Sr. Boys Volleyball ended Manitouwadge Wolverines vs. Marathon Falcons: 25-9, 25-19,and 15-12 in the morning and 26-24, 25-19, and 9-15 in the afternoon.  Senior basketball action was incredibly intense to say the least as Manitouwadge vs. Marathon resulted in back to back wins of 30-29 and 22-18.

What’s next? The Wolverines are playing in a tournament in Thunder Bay next  week. The NSSSAA website also has a Junior & Senior Girls Invitational NSSSAA Tournament at Manitouwadge High School posted for November 6th & 7th though this is not confirmed.  Whatever they Wolverines do, it will certainly be worth watching as they are playing with a great deal of passion these days having dedicated their season to friend, Jamie Lee Hoban, her own team, the senior girls basketball, having been nicknamed “Team #55” in her honour.
