TRILLIUM GRANT FOR NORTH SHORE GOLF CLUB
Gravelle announces $63,900 to improve healthy lifestyles in Nipigon area
NIPIGON, ON: The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) will provide a one-year community grant of $63,900 to improve the quality of the North Shore Golf Club in Nipigon under the “Healthier Ontarians” program. Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle made the announcement today in Nipigon, along with OTF representative Ted Hanley, President Doug Menchions and project manager Peter Elliott of the North Shore Golf Club.
The grant will be used to purchase three greens mowers and an aerator to groom and maintain the community-run course, and is expected to stimulate a 10% increase in memberships.
“I’m delighted to see this investment in the North Shore Golf Club,” said Michael Gravelle, MPP, Thunder Bay-Superior North. “It’s such an important part of this community, and it will be great to see both new and existing members enjoying a better-quality course and participating in a sport that contributes to a healthy, active lifestyle.”
“We are very appreciative of the efforts of our MPP and of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and staff in helping us obtain this funding. The money will go towards new equipment which is sorely needed,” said Doug Menchions, President, North Shore Golf Club. “We’d also like to thank OTF for acknowledging the more than 3,000 volunteer hours that go into keeping the Golf Club running each year,” added Project Manager Peter Elliott.
The North Shore Golf Club was incorporated in 1961 and provides typical golf club activities including a 9 hole course, women’s, men’s, seniors and mixed leagues, tournaments, memberships and daily greens fees. It is governed by an eight member, volunteer board of directors, employs three full-time and three part-time workers and is supported by 24 volunteers from the community.
A leading grantmaker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF
builds healthy and vibrant communities.
Elliot was quite proud to share an update regarding the status of the golf course; attendees were impressed to hear the greens had already been cut (one day prior) in preparation for the 2010 golf season.
