CANADA AND ONTARIO IMPROVE HIGHWAY 11/17

Funding will create jobs, boost local economy

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Infrastructure and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound – Muskoka, and The Honourable Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, and Forestry, and Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay – Superior North, today announced stimulus funding that will benefit the local economy in Northwestern Ontario and improve local infrastructure for
years to come.  Today’s investment of $3.54 million in joint federal and provincial funding will rehabilitate Highway 11/17.

“Our government is supporting infrastructure projects through Canada’s Economic Action Plan as they create jobs and build stronger communities,” said Minister Clement. “These major road improvements will ensure the safety and efficiency of our transportation network for residents of Thunder Bay and surrounding areas”. 

“This project is an exciting step forward which illustrates the McGuinty government’s continuing commitment to bettering the highways in Northern Ontario,” said The Honourable Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, and Forestry, and MPP for Thunder Bay – Superior North. “By working with our federal counterparts, we can continue to create jobs where people need them the most and help the economy thrive once again.”

Ongoing construction on Hwy 17 outside Terrace Bay - April 7,2010

This is a 7.7km project from 6.7km west of Hwy 17 westerly that involves reconstruction, and resurfacing at South Trout Creek Bridge located between Nipigon and Red Rock.

Total eligible project costs are $3.54 million. The governments of Canada and Ontario are each providing up to $1.768 million.  This funding announcement is for one of 43 highway, bridge and local road projects announced on April 7, 2010 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty

Ontario’s portion of the funding is part of the $32-billion infrastructure stimulus funding announced in the 2009 budget.

Today’s announcement represents contributions from both the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario. Since 2007, the governments of Canada and Ontario have committed more than $13 billion in funding to more than 6,400 infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
