A Successful Birding Festival in Dorion!

Dorion on Day One, prior to boarding the Robin and Bluebird buses!

May 15 and 16, 2010 proved to be a perfect one for close to 100 birders. Not only did the weather co-operate, but the birders were able to record 97 species this year.
Day One in the Dorion area was an especially exciting one at Ouimet Canyon as the Peregrine Falcons put on a show and a half for excited viewers. Not only were they visible, but they were seen diving from great heights (“stooping”).
Some of the birders were actually able to watch as one Falcon caught a bat in mid-air and carry it to the rock face to enjoy a mid-afternoon snack!

Day Two on The Nipigon Trail offered up another valuable sighting of a Marbled Godwit.  This shorebird was seen at Sawmill Point as it moved about the shallows.  Soon it will be heading west to breed, but thankfully took the past weekend to spend a little time in Nipigon!

It is safe to say that the expert guides provided not only their vast knowledge of bird behaviour, but were also able to identify many species by sound.  This was a vital aspect, as many of our area birds were particularly shy this year, and insisted on remaining hidden!  Applause to Rob Swainson, Al Harris, Brian Ratcliff, Dr. Nick Escott, and George Holborn for being so helpful.

No one ate like a bird this year, and once again, three different groups served the Festival goers some delicious meals.  The Dorion Recreation Committee, The Dorion Museum Board and The Black Bay Friendship Club are to be applauded for their efforts.   Birders enjoyed a fantastic lunch on Sunday in Nipigon, provided by Cara!  Great food!

Organizers are eagerly awaiting next years Festival, and judging by the comments they have received, there will be many returning for another successful Festival in May of 2011!
