Jade Millette

When Jade Millette’s Mom and a close friend pushed her to enter Dubreuilville’s Miss Strongman Competition last year, she wasn’t sure, she had never really seen herself as the pageant type but as more of Millette’s friends talked about it she started to think it might be a fun experience.

Millette won the 2010 Miss Strongman Crown and was thrilled but she had no intentions of going to the Miss Northern Ontario pageant because again, it wasn’t really her thing. What business did a girl who had spent most of her life ‘living in the bush’ have competing in a glamorous pageant? Besides, getting all dolled up wasn’t something she had much experience with.

Well, she persuaded herself, to give it a try, after having battled with a serious eating disorder for nearly 4 years, Millette realized that participation in the Miss Northern Ontario pageant could help remind her how beautiful she is, and that beauty is of course more about self-confidence and who you are on the inside than what you might perceive as looking back at you from a mirror’s reflection.

Millette took the challenge presented by the Miss Northern Ontario pageant a step further, something quite typical of the Grade 12 L’Orée des Bois student say friends who describe her as an overachiever and a perfectionist, and chose to share the story of her battle with anorexia and her frustrations with media’s influence on young women’s self-perception and physical expectations in her inspirational speech at the Miss Northern Ontario competition in Sault-Ste Marie. Millette spoke of how girls and young women see themselves and how they should think of themselves to be healthy, it was a moving discourse and the audience at Laurientian University, where the competition was held, hung on to every word.

Millette has since returned from the pageant and will share news of the experience here on OntarioNewsNorth.com soon. What does she have lined up for her next challenge? Millette turns 18 May 31st, she will graduate from L’Oree in June and has already been accepted into the 2 year Veterinary Technician Program at College Boreal in New Liskeard. OntarioNewsNorth.com wishes Jade all the best as she goes off to college, certain she will be a great success!

**If the name Jade Millette sounds familiar to Manitouwadge residents, it should! If you ever spoke with the late Cathy Nickerson, a.k.a. Mum, for even 5 minutes, you would have heard her brag of Jade (and all her Grandchildren of which she was so proud), Jade is the daughter of Nickerson’s son Tony Trudeau (another huge fan of Jade’s).
