Aboriginal Day on the Northshore

Pic River Aboriginal Day Celebrations

by Karina Hunter

PIC RIVER, ON – Saturday, June 19th Pic River First Nations residents welcomed their Northshore neighbours for a full day of family oriented fun.

Activities began at 10am with Cultural Teachings in the Tipi at the Mouth of the Pic River; these including trapping demonstrations, a lands & resources presentation and traditional songs and music enjoyed by all. Throughout the afternoon, participants feasted on a community potluck which fueled families for the Bocce Ball Tournament.

Later an Archery Contest and the popular Pic River edition of “A Minute to Win It” provided entertainment until 9pm when hundreds of Northshore residents from surrounding communities began flooding on to the Pow Wow grounds in anticipation of the fireworks presentation.

Young and young at heart danced under the big tent as the sun went down.  People continued to arrive even after the first few ‘false alarms’ when one or two fireworks were released at 10 minute intervals.  Finally, around 11:30pm the fireworks were let loose – and what a show it was!

The sky lit up full of colours as an incredible variety of fireworks put on a breathtaking show. Bang, crash, with booms felt in the air it continued for at well over 30 minutes. What a wind up to a great day.

Activities continued Sunday with a private Fish Derby, presented by Health & Children & Family Learning Centre, for Pic River Members.

“Happy Aboriginal Day!” To OntarioNewsNorth.com’s First Nations readers.

Northshore Aboriginal Day activities continued today (Monday) in Pic Mobert with activities planned from 10am – 10pm, if you have photos to share from either event, please send them to Editor@OntarioNewsNorth.com
