West Fire Region Situation Update

June 20, was a quiet day across the region. Fair skies and scattered showers were the norm today.

Nipigon Fire 35 continues to receive full attack with seven crews committed and two helicopters. The fire is responding well to suppression tactics and no problems are anticipated. This fire is located between Audin and Nakina and is approximately 50ha. The cause of this fire is still being investigated.

One fire in Quetico Provincial Park, one fire north of Ogoki Post, one fire in Wabikimi Provincial Park and two fires in the Far North above Pickle Lake continue to be monitored. These fires are quiet and no problems are anticipated. These fires are all a result of lightning.

Ontario responded to a need for assistance from northern Manitoba today. One Type 1 Initial Attack fire crew from Kenora, Fort Frances, Red Lake, Dryden and Sioux Lookout Fire Management Headquarters departed the Dryden Regional Airport this afternoon bound The Pas, Manitoba.  Ontario has also sent five Type 1 Initial Attack fire crews from the East Fire Region, two 415 waterbombers, one birddog aircraft, one Air Attack Officer, and one Agency Representative. As of June 16, 2010 Manitoba has had 195 fires burning over 27 000 hectares.

Ontario also has resources and personnel in Quebec, thirty  four-person Type 1 Initial Attack fire crews, six sector leaders, one division leader, two agency representatives, two 415 waterbombers, one birddog aircraft and one air attack officer.

Ontario has committed two Fire Behavioural Analysts to the Northwest Territories.

To date the whole province of Ontario has had 643 fires, burning a total of 12 384 hectares
