OLOL All-Female Graduating Class of 2010

MANITOUWADGE, ON –Five young ladies, Tricia Chartier, Josephine Robertson, Anna-Marie Gillman, Mercedes Hunter and Melodie Mallais, Grade 8 students of Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL) Elementary School Immersion and English Language programs, celebrated their graduation Tuesday, June 22nd with a mass at OLOL Parish followed by supper and awards presentation at their school gymnasium in the company of friends, family and the teachers who have guided them through their Christian education, most since Junior Kindergarten. 

At the awards ceremony, Mr. Brian Johnson spoke to the graduates, on behalf of students and staff of Manitouwadge High School, where they will continue their studies in September (though Johnson himself will no longer be there).

There were many inspirational words shared with the girls by a variety of dignitaries including; Anna-Marie Gillman, President of the Student Council who, after speaking of the school’s fundraising successes during the 09-10 school year, presented the 2010 Valedictorian, Mercedes Hunter. Hunter spoke of 2010 being an unforgettable year, of her reluctance to say goodbye to the OLOL family and her enthusiasm going forward to secondary school in the fall.
 
Each student was presented with their Superior North Catholic District School Board Diploma and pin before the following awards were distributed;

  • Father Paul Conway Award: Anna-Marie Gillman
  • Sportsmanship Award: Anna-Marie Gillman
  • French Second Language Award: Josephine Robertson
  • Stoughton Family Award: Mercedes Hunter and Melodie Mallais
  • O.E.C.T.A. Award: Melodie Mallais
  • Bradley’s Badge of Courage: Melodie Mallais
  • Catholic Women’s Society Award: Tricia Chartier
  • Knight’s of Columbus Award: Mercedes Hunter
  • School Spirit Award: Anna-Marie Gillman
  • Special Merit Awards:
    • Outstanding Artist: Tricia Chartier
    • Leadership: Anna-Marie Gillman
    • Catholic Perspective: Mercedes Hunter
    • Outstanding Skills in Technology: Josephine Robertson
    • Unquenchable Thirst for Knowledge: Melodie Mallais

Principal Diane Nelson ended the evening with a very touching goodbye discourse, reminding the girls to “Reach for the moon” that whether they would reach it they’d be certain to find themselves “amongst countless stars!”.
