Safety Week at Playground

Manitouwadge Playground Program Growing Fast

Manitouwadge Recreation Centre

MANITOUWADGE, ON – The summer Playground Program held at the Manitouwadge Recreation Centre and organised by the Township of Manitouwadge continues to welcome many new participants. This is undoutebly due in part to the incredibly affordable fees, just $35/wk per/child though details of the fun and creative programming offered each week have spread around town and attracted many new participants.

This was yet another  busy week at the Playground Program as supervisors, Angele Lamothe, Brittany Turnbull and Felicia Cain, worked with the theme of ‘Safety Week’.  More than a dozen participants, 4 to 10 years old, had plenty of fun as they learned about the people in our community who work to keep us safe.

Tuesday, the group was visited, and fingerprinted, by the Manitouwadge Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment when everyone had a turn to sit, the police vehicle and sound the siren; a special highlight for many was the opportunity to try on handcuffs though many had hands small enough to simply slip in and out of the cuffs.

Manitouwage Volunteer Fire Department brought one of the Fire trucks by on Wednesday again the children were thrilled to get to sit in the truck and here the sirens sounded.

Thursday Playground participants learned about the importance of water safety as they went swimming at the Oasis Pool. The weather was ideal and everyone had a great time.

Finally Friday, Lamothe and Cain led the group on a walk to the Ambulance Base, children visited the EMS Vehicle and learned about the duties and responsibilities of paramedics before walking back to the Recreation Centre.

Each week, Playground staff, under the supervision of Community Programmer Shawna Patterson, keep participants busy with a program full of fun, learning and new friendsips, weekdays from 12:30 to 4:30pm. To register your 4 to 10 year old child in the program visit the Township of Manitouwadge Muncipal Office or contact Shawna Petterson at 826-3227 ext.237.

This Monday, July 26th, the 5th Playground Session of 2010 begins, please remember that there will be no swimming lessons at the Oasis Pool from August 3rd – 6th so if you want your kids to keep busy and active during that week, signing them up to participate in Playground Session #6 is a great option!
