White River Celebrates 125 Years

WHITE RIVER, ON – Saturday, July 10th, White River residents celebrated their community’s 125th anniversary with a pig roast at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.  In attendance for the special day were White River mayor, Angello Bazzoni, Wawa Mayor Howard Whent (who grew up in White River), and Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes.  Just one hour behind schedule, Acting Fire Chief Dave Poliquin, and volunteer Rob Sador removed the large swine from the perch from which he had been cooking since early that morning.

Salads, buns, and other side dishes had been prepared by Poliquin’s wife and many other volunteers, the door and bar were managed mostly by Harmony Club members.  There were 5 large cakes, prepared by Melinda Ray, each with its own message, the first said “A place to call home” a familiar moto for the small town whose claim to fame is being the home of Winnie the Pooh, the next three cakes had the numbers “1”, “2” & “5” and finally the last had a beautiful recreation of the 125th logo.

It was a very special day and the fun continued for most attendees,  long into the night.  The 125th Celebrations are not over, there is a reunion planned during Poohfest (find a page dedicated to that on Facebook) and 125th Committee Volunteer, Tara Hart reminded attendees of Saturday’s celebration that work on the 125th Anniversary Historical Book is ongoing as well.

Congratulations White River!
