McGuinty Government Steps Up Donation To Red Cross And Red Crescent Societies

In response to worsening conditions in the flood-affected regions of Pakistan, Ontario is donating an additional $800,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, bringing the total donated to $1 million.

These funds will help provide care to victims of the flooding in Pakistan. According to the United Nations, floods following monsoon rains have affected over 14 million people, with an estimated death toll of 1,373; and six million people are in dire need of humanitarian food assistance.

  • The floods began in Baluchistan province on July 22. Flooding then spread across the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province and then south into Punjab and Sindh Provinces.
  • More than 302,000 houses are known to have been either damaged or destroyed.
  • Premier Dalton McGuinty visited Punjab province during a 2007 trade mission to India and Pakistan.
