Shakespearean Theatre Arrives North

Romeo kisses his would-be bride one last time before consuming the poison.

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Traveling on their True North Tour the Salamander Theatre group performed Romeo and Juliet to a full house at the Manitouwadge High School auditorium Saturday, August 21st.

Preceding the main performance, the troupe readied the audience by taking them back in time; in character, yet still speaking in modern English, they visited all corners of the audience selling t-shirts, oranges or a song. The latter being their most popular ware. This continued for approximately 10-15 minutes before transitioning seamlessly into the play.

The performance could have been directed by Shakespeare himself were it not for the colourful Converse sneakers the actors wore and the pair of ladies included in the group. The performance was so fresh, so enthusiastic and enthralling, attendees were on the edge of their seats throughout as if seeing or hearing the story for the first time.

Afterwards, the show’s host Nite on the Town Entertainment Series of the Arts’ and organizer Natalie Labbee thanked performers and attendees for a wonderful evening, adding a very sincere thank you to sponsors and to several local families who had opened their homes to the group and their artistic director.  Labbee shared news of the new ticket packages available for the 2010/11 Nite on the Town Entertainment Series; these are very flexible with options for every budget. She also encouraged the audience to meet the actors in the lobby on their way out, an opportunity few passed up.

Two shows remain in the True North Tour, tonight & tomorrow:

  • Thursday, August 26th Sioux Lookout, Queen Elizabeth District High School @ 7:30pm
  • Friday, August 27th Dryden, The Centre, 100 Casimir Ave. 7:30pm
