Full-Day Kindergarten Starts Next Week in the Thunder Bay District

Full-day kindergarten begins next week in 12 schools in the Thunder Bay District. It is being offered at:
Thunder Bay – Superior North
- Ecole catholique Franco-Superieur, Thunder Bay
- Algonquin Avenue, Thunder Bay
- Vance Chapman School, Thunder Bay
- Holy Saviour School, Marathon
- Margaret Twomey Public School, Marathon
- Corpus Christi School, Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay – Atikokan
- McKellar Park School, Thunder Bay
- Sherbrooke School, Thunder Bay
- Westmount School, Thunder Bay
- St. Patrick’s School, Atikokan
- North Star Community School, Atikokan
- St. Vincent School, Thunder Bay
Since 2003, the government has reduced class sizes in the primary grades, increased test scores and raised the graduation rate. Full-day Kindergarten is the next step in the government’s plan to help its youngest children get a better education in Kindergarten through Grade 3.
A full day of learning will provide four- and five-year-olds with the strong foundation they need for future learning. Helping students reach their full potential is an important part of the Open Ontario Plan. Students who achieve early success in school are more likely to perform well later in school and go on to postsecondary education.
QUICK FACTS
- This September about 35,000 four- and five-year-olds will be in full-day kindergarten at almost 600 schools.
- The Centre for Spatial Economics says full-day learning will provide a greater economic benefit than any other sector of the Ontario economy.
- Local boards have received $2 million in capital funding to build new classrooms and renovate and equip existing ones to support full-day kindergarten.
