Science in Nature with OLOL

This Week at Our Lady of Lourdes School Manitouwadge

LIFE AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Learning opportunities outside the classroom.

A well rounded, quality education is not restricted to the classroom or to the confines of the school.  The students at Our Lady of Lourdes had some enriching out-of-class learning experiences over the course of last week.

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Monday morning, September 20th, students from JK to grade 8 were treated to the ultimate lesson in French as a Second Language (FSL)!  Rolland Bibeau (Beebo) had our students singing, dancing and acting through a highly interactive presentation during which new vocabulary and new songs were introduced.

Pictured is Beebo with two of our own “rock stars”, who were definitely enjoying the performance.

The JK/SK classes pursued learning about Fall with a nature walk through the Perry Lake trail where they collected leaves and other objects.  These were brought to the classroom, observed, analyzed and discussed before being used to create “fall posters”.

Mme Foucault took her Grade 4 Science class for a walk to the Perry Lake Trail as well, they used the opportunity to discover and observe a variety of habitats.  Students, with their magnifying glasses, notebooks and pencils, were highly motivated to leave the classroom and explore the lifestyles of a variety of animals and insects.  The next science lesson will be based on the students’ findings, notes, and observations.

PUKASKWA NATIONAL PARK, ON – Tuesday, September 21st, the grades 4, 5, and 6 were bussed to Pukaskwa National Park having been invited for “Forest Day” which was filled with activities and presentations.  Students learned about the importance of trees and the need to protect our natural environment; they deepened their knowledge and understanding of Native culture; observing an elder making medicine from plants, and even tasted the medicine.  The students and their teachers are very grateful to the Northeast Superior Forest Community for inviting them for a wonderful opportunity.
