Olympian Katie Weatherston Inspires at LEX Awards Banquet

THUNDER BAY, ON – Olympic Hockey Gold Medalist Katie Weatherson described her long journey to winning the 2006 Torino Women’s Hockey Tournament to the players of the Lakehead Express Soccer Club (LEX) Saturday, September 11th at the LEX annual Awards Banquet. Weatherston emphasized to the players that no goal is achieved without hardship, and encouraged them to continue to seek success in athletics and education.

Weatherston’s speech highlighted an evening where each competitive team in the club had a Most Valuable Player, and Coaches award given out as recognition for their play in the 2009/2010 Indoor and Outdoor seasons. Sabrina Carew was named the recipient of the 2010 Claire Fraser Award, in honour of the former LEX player who died while on vacation in 2004 at the age of 22. Former LEX Coach John Rider was also given an award as recognition for his long tenure with the club, and the excellent work he has done with players over the past decade. Rob Pasqualino was named Coach of the Year, as voted on by the clubs coaching staff.
