Cancer Fair Provides Tools & Resources

North Shore Family Health Team

SCHREIBER, ON – October 6th, the North Shore Family Health Team of Schreiber and Terrace Bay held their first Cancer Health Fair from 3-7pm at the Schreiber Recreation Centre.  The fair provided residents with information on cancer screening, new diagnoses, and all stages along the pathway to wellness. This come and go event, which welcomed residents from across the region, included wonderful prized donated by the various health agencies in attendance and provided delicious healthy refreshments.

Participants included:

  • Dr. Heather McLean and Heather Vita from the Regional Cancer Care Centre;
  • Kiri Butter from the Canadian Cancer Society;
  • Ashley Riley, RN from the McCausland Hospital Chemotherapy program;
  • Michelle Strong, Registered Physiotherapist representing McCausland Hospital and End of Life Committee;
  • Bill Vantour and John St. Amand from the Thunder Bay prostate support group;
  • Brenda Asmussen Community Health Nurse
  • Sara Park Community Health Promoter from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit;
  • North Shore Family Health Team members:
    •  Beverley Turpin, Administrator
    • Debbie Roen, Receptionist
    • Alison Mclaughlin, Receptionist
    • Jessica Kruger, Administrative Support Worker
    • Susan Fairservice Nurse Practitioner,
    • Suzanne Black RPN, and
    • Lindy Coughlin RPN.

A large variety of educational resources were available, covering a wide array of topics including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of all types of Cancer.

Presentations included:

  • Colorectal screening by Dr. McLean;
  • The fight against colon cancer by Kiri Butter;
  • Prostate cancer screening and prevention by Bill Vantour;
  • Michelle Strong on physical activity and cancer, along with End of Life Home Care
  • Nurse Practitioner Susan Fairservice elaborated on services provided by the Physicians and members of the Norths Shore Family Health Team in the prevention, screening and treatment of all types of cancer.

In hopes of raising cancer awareness, the North Shore Family Health Team aspires to organize this event on an annual basis to allow people who want to empower themselves in the prevention and fight against cancer, or who have loved ones who have been affected by cancer to access the education, information and resources they require.

The North Shore Family Health Team would like to thank all of the representatives who participated, along with the Township of Schreiber who graciously provided the use of their facility, and also to extend thanks and warmest wishes to everyone who attended the 2010 Cancer Health Fair.
