McGuinty Government Reminds Motorists To Not Drink And Drive

The approach of the Thanksgiving long weekend is a good time to remind motorists to drive smart and stay sober while travelling Ontario’s roads.

Ontario has some of the toughest laws in Canada, making the province’s roads safer for all drivers, including:

  • Immediate, seven day impoundment of vehicles driven at 50 km/h or more above the speed limit, or involved in stunt driving or racing
  • Increased fines for speeding 30-34 km/h over the limit
  • Doubling the maximum fines for offences such as careless driving, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, failure to stop at a red light and failure to wear a seatbelt

With drinking and driving continuing to be the leading criminal cause of death in Ontario, the government has put in place stricter measures to get these drivers off our roads:

  • An immediate three-day licence suspension for all drivers caught with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 to 0.08 (the “warn” range), or a 90-day licence suspension if caught with a BAC greater than 0.08
  • A new zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) rule for all drivers 21 years of age and under

QUICK FACTS

  • On average, nine people are killed and nearly 600 people are injured in motor vehicle crashes each year during the Thanksgiving weekend
  • One quarter of drivers involved in fatal crashes throughout the year were driving aggressively including driving too fast for road and weather conditions, running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and failing to yield the right of way
  • One quarter of all fatal crashes on Ontario roads involve alcohol
