Alert to local residents – Phone Fraud

Kenora, ON. – OPP caution residents about providing credit card information over the phone. Police received a report yesterday when a local resident was solicited by someone claiming they were fundraising for a local sports group. They decided to support the cause and provided their credit card information. It was learned later that the organization was not fundraising at this time.

Telephone frauds are not uncommon in ours or any other community. Police caution anyone that may consider supporting charities or other organizations over the phone. Providing personal information such as credit cards details is always a risky decision. If in doubt ask the caller for a contact to confirm the fundraising activity.

Anyone concerned about fraudulent activity can call local police, crime stoppers or Phone Busters (1- 888 – 495 – 8501)
