Attempting To Shoot Beaver Proves Costly

An Iroquois Falls man has been fined $1,700 for several trapping-related offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and an offence under the Liquor Licence Act.

Yvan Fournier was fined $750 for hunting beaver without a licence, $500 for hunting beaver during the closed season, $250 for unlawfully damaging a beaver dam, and $200 for having liquor in an open container in other than a licensed premises, residence or private place. In addition to the fines, Fournier is prohibited from trapping for two years. The shotgun and a tool he used were forfeited to the Crown.

Court heard that on July 6, 2010, conservation officers found Fournier attempting to shoot beaver along the old CN rail line in Bonis Township east of Cochrane. In doing so, Fournier had broken a beaver dam. The beaver season was closed at the time and Fournier had no authorization to conduct this activity. It was also determined that Fournier was drinking beer at the time.  When imposing the penalty, the court considered that Fournier had prior convictions for two trapping offences and one liquor offence.

Justice of the Peace Dolores Boyuk heard the case in Ontario Court of Justice, Cochrane, on November 18, 2010.
