Superior East OPP Warn Of Unsafe Ice

UNSAFE ICE CONDITIONS

WAWA, ON – Recently Superior East OPP have been receiving complaints of individuals going out on the ice on the lakes and rivers within our patrol area.  The OPP wish to advise the public that ice conditions are not considered safe at this time of the year and extreme caution should be exercised before venturing out.

Ice safety and weight-bearing properties of ice can be affected by many factors including thickness, currents, snow cover, air temperature and age of the ice.  Conditions can change dramatically from lake-to-lake and from bay-to-bay.

The OPP is not in a position to ever declare ice conditions safe and the public is encouraged to always play safe when enjoying our outdoors.  IF IN DOUBT, DON’T GO OUT!
