Six outstanding health care innovations from across Ontario will receive awards

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is a finalist for an Innovations in Health Care award in the Improving Patient/Resident Centredness category for its initiative titled The Road to Excellence is Paved with Partnerships.

Finalists have been determined for all of the 2010 Innovations in Health Care Awards, which are presented in recognition of outstanding innovation in the following six categories:

Improving Integration
Improving Patient/Resident Centredness
Improving Evidence-based Practice
Improving Access
Improving Safety
Improving Efficiency

TBRHSC’s initiative results from their Strategic Plan 2010. Through organizational transformation and a focus on quality patient care, they developed a roadmap to guide them to a new destination. Patient and Family Centred Care became the blueprint for system wide changes through partnerships between patients and families, staff, physicians and volunteers to improve the experience of care for every patient, every time through CARING TOGETHER. Patient Family Advisors (PFAs) are at the heart of the Patient and Family Centred Care Model providing valuable insights, and firsthand knowledge of how services impact patients. In partnership with staff and physicians, patients and families have engaged together with over 100 teams and committees to make meaningful changes in care, policy and practice that has increased staff/ physician and patient satisfaction by 17% and 21.6% respectively in one year.

The winners will be announced on November 10 in Toronto at the Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo, which highlights the innovative projects and solutions that support and shape how Ontario delivers health care.

Over 100 exhibitors will reflect six themes that are helping to make a difference in delivering better patient care.
The first Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo was held in 2006.
The ministry’s redeveloped Health Care Options web site is giving Ontarians a brand new way to access and learn about the many health care options — things like family health teams and nurse practitioner-led clinics — in their communities.
