1,500 In Fines For 3 Timmins-Area Residents

January 25, 2011

Three Timmins-area residents have received a total of $1,500 in fines and a court order for offences on Crown land.

Oliver Maki of Horwood Lake pleaded guilty to filling shore lands without a work permit and was fined $500.

The court heard that Maki used a tractor to place large boulders and gravel on the shore at his home at Hoodoo Bay on Horwood Lake in Keith Township. Maki did the work without a work permit during the spring and summer of 2010. Maki restored the shore lands with a work permit before his court date.

In a separate case, Richard Rodrigue of Horwood Lake pleaded guilty to depositing material on a Crown lake bed and was fined $500.

The court heard that Rodrigue removed rocks from the lake bed around his boathouse and deposited them around his dock cribbing at Hoodoo Bay on Horwood Lake in Keith Township. Rodrigue did the work without a work permit in the spring of 2010. Due to a severe drought, water levels at Hoodoo Bay were at a record low at the time of the work.

In addition, Ronald Carriere of Timmins pleaded guilty to occupying Crown land for longer than allowed and was fined $500. Carriere was ordered by the court to remove his camper trailer from Crown land. He is prohibited from occupying Crown land within a two-kilometre radius of Jen Lake in Adams Township south of Timmins for a period of one year.

The court heard that Carriere occupied the access point to Jen Lake for 160 days during the summer, fall and winter of 2010.

Justice of the Peace Jean Marie Blier heard the cases in the Ontario Court of Justice, City of Timmins, on January 20, 2011.
