NAN, CANADA AND LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY COME TOGETHER FOR HISTORIC TREATY SYMPOSIUM

THUNDER BAY, ON – The Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN)/Canada Treaty Discussion Forum, in partnership with Lakehead University’s Aboriginal Initiatives, are hosting an historic Treaty Symposium.  The two-day event, which begins today, will bring together First Nation leadership, Elders, students, youth, and other interested parties, to provide public education on Treaty No. 9 and Treaty No. 5 in Ontario’s Far North.

The Symposium is to include presentations and discussion panels with the participation of NAN leadership, representatives from the provincial and federal governments, and Elders from the Treaty No. 5 and Treaty No. 9 communities.  There will be a special presentation by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students from Lakehead University describing their perspectives on the importance of Treaties and what they have learned during the event.  In addition, the Symposium will include a panorama of historical landmarks in the Treaty relationship with the Crown.

The NAN/Canada Treaty Discussion Forum Symposium continues through tomorrow (Feb.24th), at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.
