Growth Plan For Northern Ontario is An Opportunity

The Northeastern Superior Mayors Group views the introduction of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario as a great step towards a long journey back to prosperity for Northern Ontario. Over the next 25 years, the plan will ensure a strategic framework that sets out policies and actions on how the Government of Ontario will work with Aboriginal Communities, Municipalities and the private sector in Northern Ontario.

Members of the NESMG were active participants in the development of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario, attending many of the regional sessions and submitting ideas and correspondence to both the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association and the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities during the three year process.

The NESMG recognizes that the Northeastern Superior Region has been one of the hardest hit during the present recession losing over 1,000 direct forestry jobs, significant population and property assessment along with public sector funding for many services. It will therefore be important for the action items contained within the plan to address the short term recovery of this region.
