DANGERS OF SPRING ICE

NIPIGON, ON –The Nipigon and Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind the public to practice proper ice safety.  Spring means changing and therefore uncertain ice conditions on the local lakes and rivers.

The OPP are encouraging people to stay off of the ice when conditions are obviously dangerous.  Anyone considering venturing on the ice for recreational activities should do so with someone who is familiar with local conditions and currents.  Be sure to keep children away from ice covered bodies of water, creeks and fast flowing rivers.  This time of year ice conditions vary from hour to hour and from place to place.

To avoid ice risks snowmobilers are encouraged to ride open, land based trails whenever possible.  If the personal choice is made to cross the ice, be prepared and use proper safety equipment such as wearing a survival suit, carrying ice picks, and carrying a rescue rope.  Do not travel on the ice alone, at night, or after consuming alcohol.

You go onto the ice at your own risk.  Is it worth it?
