Nipigon Resident Charged in Union Fraud Case

CHARGES LAID IN UNION FRAUD CASE

THUNDER BAY, ON – Wayne ASSELIN (64 yrs old) of Nipigon, Ontario has been charged in relation to his duties as Financial Secretary of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) Local 255.  This union represented members at the Red Rock mill until it closed operations in November 2006. 

The investigation commenced in December 2008 when a union member brought concerns forward to police about the depleted accounts.  The North West Region Crime Unit subsequently conducted a lengthy investigation which involved the execution of a number of search warrants.

It is alleged that ASSELIN misappropriated in excess of $175,000 over a seven year period.  

Charges:

  • Theft Over $5000 contrary to section 334 of the Criminal Code
  • Fraud Over $5000 contrary to section 380(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Criminal Breach of Trust contrary to section 336 of the Criminal Code

ASSELIN will appear in Nipigon Provincial Court April 19, 2011.
