Federation of Canadian Municipalities Cheers NDP Platform

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes

ELLIOT LAKE, ON – New Democrat MP Carol Hughes welcomed the news that the Federation of Canadian Municipalities is supporting the NDP Platform released on Sunday.

The statement issued by FCM President Hans Cunningham said “the first in this election campaign to call for new, long-term investments in Canada´s cities and communities.”

Hughes, seeking re-election in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, was pleased the New Democrat Platform was supported by the federation. “Our Platform addresses the issues I’ve been hearing on the doorstep, like rural and Northern health care, retirement security and practical steps to create jobs. The other Parties just aren’t delivering.”

The FCM statement also applauded the NDPs commitments to upgrade water systems and invest in Northern highways.

Hughes said the platform puts Northern families’ priorities first, with five key commitments:

  1. Hiring 1200 more doctors and 6000 more nurses.
  2.  Strengthening pensions by working with provinces to double your public pension and providing more choice over retirement savings.
  3. Kick-starting job creation with a two percent tax cut for small business and targeted tax credits for companies that hire here in Canada.
  4. Helping out family budgets by removing the federal sales tax from home heating, capping credit card fees at prime +5, and giving consumers control over cell phone bills.
  5. Fixing Ottawa for good by stopping the scandals and working with other parties to get things done for you.
