Terrace Bay Signage

The highway signage for the downtown revitalization project was erected last week with a total of 8 new signs installed that showcase what Terrace Bay has to offer.  The signs consist of a new Municipal welcome signs on either side of the Township and 3 highway billboards for the Terrace Bay Lighthouse, Terrace Bay Beach, and Aguasabon Falls.  The Municipal welcome signs continue the rebranding efforts of the Township and focus on Lake Superior and the Lighthouse.  They also include greenery to show our pride in our forestry history/present as well as they show white glaciers in an artistic look to illustrate how Terrace Bay was formed when the terraces were cut out thousands of years ago.  The Western Welcome sign was located before Hydro Bay so travelers see the welcome to Terrace bay and then immediately see Hydro Bay and associate the beauty of that sight with our community.

The 3 highway billboards on the major attractions were designed with little text and bright, bold pictures to increase travelers understanding in any language.  The highway signs also feature a person or persons doing something so that travelers can envision themselves at the attraction doing the activity.  The highway billboards were designed with a yellow border around them to make them stand out against the green forest background behind the sign.  The highway signs were designed by Korkola Designs in Thunder Bay and are being installed by Brad Hominick Productions who has most of the highway signs in the region.

Later on in the project, a Simcoe Plaza intersection sign will also be installed as an update of the existing sign at that spot.  It will continue the focus on the lighthouse as a way to draw someone’s eye to a sign that might otherwise be missed.  It will identify the lighthouse, groceries, pharmacy, restaurants, and retail with language neutral icons for recognition.

Finally, there will be signage at the major attractions showing where businesses are.  This is often referred to as the “You are Here’ signs which are based on the small signs you find inside large malls which show where you are and where you can go for more services.  These signs will be in outdoor display cases located at the lighthouse, the beach, the falls, and the tourism information centre.  They are a way for visitors to see where every business is located in Terrace Bay by way of a large map that lists businesses in bilingual categories.  Also since the signs are in outside display boards, the Municipality can easily unlock the boards and change the information when a new business is opened.  The intersection sign and “you are here” signs will be installed later in the Spring.  For more information on the downtown revitalization project, please check www.terracebay.ca/drp or visit the Terrace Bay facebook page.
