There was a time not so long ago when owning  a television was a big deal, when people had heard of computers, although not one that could fit on a desk, and MP3 players didn’t exist. Those days are gone.  Electronics are now a big part of our day-to-day lives, and there are more than ever to choose from. The more we buy, the bigger the pile of unwanted or obsolete electronics becomes. In fact, according to Environment Canada, Canadians produce 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste each year.

If these items – many of which contain hazardous components like batteries, leaded glass and bulbs with mercury – are simply dumped into landfill, the consequences to human health and the environment can be dire. It would also represent a waste of resources. Components like metal, glass and plastic can be reclaimed and used to make everything from water pipes to coins.  This stop is part of a spring/summer tour that is visiting communities across Northern Ontario.

Have items you want out of your home or office? Simply load your old or unwanted electronics into your car, drive up, and staff will unload your vehicle and safely dispose of your items. It’s that simple. We’ll also provide games for children, some special giveaways and the opportunity to learn more about the importance of recycling electronics.

Electronics recycling is something that Ontario Electronic Stewardship is striving to make easier for all Ontarians. Carol Hochu joined Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) in 2008 as its first Executive Director, to lead the implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment  (WEEE) Program. OES is a not-for-profit industry organization that oversees the safe  and responsible reuse and recycling of unwanted electronics through a vast network of  approved collection sites across the province.
