HERON BAY, ON – Pukaskwa National Park is offering entertaining ways for the whole family to celebrate our nation’s 144th birthday on Friday, July 1. In honour of Parks Canada’s centennial, admission at all Parks Canada sites is free on
Canada Day!

Festivities begin at 7:30 am with the official opening of the park’s Anishinaabe Camp and the blessing of Pukaskwa National Park. Family activities, including a traditional tobacco tie program at 11 am, will be offered by the park’s cultural interpreter. A guided hike, scavenger hunt, face painting and “A Day in the Life of Pukaskwa Staff” obstacle course round out the day’s free events. A barbecue lunch can be purchased from the Friends of Pukaskwa. Don’t forget to wear red and white for a chance to win a prize, and celebrate Canada’s birthday with a cupcake!

Pukaskwa National Park protects and presents the hilly boreal forest terrain, broken by ridges and cliffs, riddled with rock-rimmed lakes and clothed in shallow soils, while Lake Superior exerts its icy influence along the shore. At 1878 square kilometres, Pukaskwa is the largest wilderness park in Ontario operated by Parks Canada.

Established in 1911 as the Dominion Parks Branch, Parks Canada is the world’s oldest national parks service, and a world leader in protecting and presenting treasured national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas. Parks Canada turns 100 in 2011 – come celebrate!
