Manitouwadge & Thunder Bay Claim Firsts At Dualthon
MARATHON, ON –
Marathon FAST Club and Pukakswa National Park partnered to present the Pukakswa Duathlon Race, Saturday, May 28 2011.
The race consisted of a 5km run, 20km bike, and 2.5km run completed in sequence. Including racers, there were approximately 30 people in attendance. Gloomy skies and damp, cold weather did not dampen their spirits however. Participants met at the Visitors Center shortly after lunch for a brief meeting of rules and special notes before setting off together on the first run at 1 pm an unusual sight at Pukakswa Park, known primarily for its rugged shorelines and challenging inland hiking trails where visitors are used to seeing backpacks and canoes the park the day’s visitors certainly had not anticipated being witnesses to a unique event like the Duathlon.
The FAST Club, organizers of this event, brought plenty of experience in planning and excuting this type of event as they have hosted the Penn Lake Pursuit Triathlon for the past 5 summers in the town of Marathon attracting participants from across Ontario – their experience definately paid off especially in regards to facing the challenges of less than ideal weather without missing a beat! The club is sanctioned by the Ontario Association of Triathletes whose planned events meet rigorous risk management standards to ensure athletes stay safe while participating in these fun, challenging and even demanding events. Entry to the race was open to anyone 16 years and older, it attracted great regional representation; 1st place female racer was Kristy Lachance of Manitouwadge while the 1st place male racer was Thunder Bay resident, Michel Caza – CONGRATULATIONS! to each of them and all those who participated in Saturday’s Race.
FAST has not finished planning events for 2011, the next race they are challenging people to is the annual PENN LAKE PURSUIT TRIATHLON (PLPT) July 23 & 24, 2011. Watch the video below for and interview with Joe McGill (FAST Member/Duathlon organizer) in which he shares details of the PLPT race and keep watching OntarioNewsNorth.com as the big weekend approaches to stay up-to-date on any developments or changes.
