OPP Investigate Single Vehicle Collision on Highway 17

MARATHON, ON – Monday June 20, 2011 at approximately 9:30am, Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a single vehicle personal injury motor vehicle collision which had occurred on Highway # 17 at Steele River, west of Marathon. Marathon OPP and ambulance subsequently responded to the scene.

Investigation has determined that an eastbound motor vehicle struck a flagman and subsequently the lone male driver of the vehicle left the scene on foot. The only description of the driver available at this time is a male approximately 6 feet tall, heavy-set, dark-complexioned with dark hair wearing a dark blue shirt and bluejeans.

The highway is currently closed and motorists are being asked to not pick up any hitchhikers in the area of Steel River. If a male hitchhiker is observed, please contact Marathon OPP at 807-229-0220 or the Provincial Communications Centre at 1-888-310-1122.

The investigation is continuing.
