THUNDER BAY, ON – Students from the Thunder Bay campus were the first to receive certificates, diplomas and honourary diplomas today at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium during Confederation College’s graduation ceremonies.

President Pat Lang spoke to a capacity crowd in the morning and afternoon convocations.  “Graduation is definitely one of my most cherished duties as President,” said Lang.  “Seeing the excitement and pride of each student, their family and friends, is most gratifying and serves to remind me why I chose a career in education.”

Dr. Gary Polonsky was made a Fellow of Confederation College.  Polonsky has been involved in education for over 45 years and at 5 institutions, but it all began here at Confederation.  “I am truly honoured to receive this recognition from such a fine institution; one that I have had the pleasure to be a part of in my early years as a member of faculty and leadership team and have continued to support throughout my career.”

Two honourary diplomas were also conferred during the afternoon ceremony.  Chief Pelletier of the Red Rock Indian Band was awarded an honourary diploma in Business Administration as well as Jack Masters, who received an honourary diploma in General Arts and Science.

Chair, Marilyn Gouthro, presided over the ceremonies on behalf of the Board of Governors and extended her congratulations to all of the graduates of 2011.  “We are extremely proud of you and confident that you will each make your way successfully in this world,” said Gouthro.

Faculty member, Barb Morrison, was also honoured at today’s ceremony.  Barb was identified by her peers and given the Board of Governors’ Award of Excellence.

Two employers of the year were selected in 2011, both from the northwest region.  They are Barrick-Hemlo from Marathon and Riverside Health Care Facilities in Fort Frances.  Both awards will be presented at regional convocation ceremonies.

“Graduation is about the beginning of a lifelong learning adventure,” said President Lang.  “I wish each and every graduate every success as they realize their hopes, dreams and aspirations.”
