OTTAWA, ON  –Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes joins with her New Democrat colleagues in unanimously supporting Nycole Turmel as interim leader of the New Democratic Party, while Jack Layton temporarily steps aside to fight a second battle with cancer.

“We have overwhelmingly and unanimously supported Jack’s recommendation that Nycole Turmel be our interim leader,” said Hughes. “This is a very emotional time, but Jack’s courage is inspiring all of us to stay-the-course and to continue our fight for hard working Canadians.”

New Democrat MP’s gathered in Ottawa Wednesday to attend an emergency caucus meeting following Layton’s shocking announcement. After receiving unanimous support from caucus to Layton’s recommendation that Nycole Turmel be made interim leader, today the Party’s federal council ratified the proposed leadership change.

“We are a united party,” said Hughes. “We have a strong and effective caucus and we have a strong leader in Jack Layton. We want to give him the time he needs to rest in the hopes that he will be able to return in time for the fall session in September.”

“The NDP have never wavered from difficult challenges. The challenge that Jack now faces has united us even more in our determination to work with Canadians to build a better country” said Hughes.
