Mayor and CCG Chair Weigh In On Evacuee Situation

Wawa’s Volunteers are the Best

WAWA, ON – “Wawa’s volunteers are the best”; that was the quote from Mayor Linda Nowicki as she helped volunteers from the Wawa and Area Victims Services and others make beds out at the Superior Court Motel for the evacuees from Sandy Lake first nation.

The entire community has responded. The Community Control Group (CCG) has a diverse volunteer makeup including; Wawa and area Victims Services, CHADWIC, the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department and the Canadian Red Cross. Chris Wray, Chair of the CCG stated that; “while the majority of the CC is comprised of people representing the broader public sector, the CCG could not function without the efforts of our volunteer groups.”

In addition to the volunteers noted above, efforts should also be recognized by the local churches who have volunteered in collecting clothing, picking up litter and general assistance. There is also a large group of volunteers who have been operating the various shuttles for the visitors.

Mayor Nowicki also discussed the efforts of the broader public sector organizations such as the Municipality of Wawa, the OPP, Algoma Public Health, the Algoma DDSAB, EMO and INAC; “all of these organizations have participated in this process and many of the staff have worked twenty (20) hour days, overextending themselves so that those who have been displaced from their homes can feel comfortable, this is very admirable.  We should be proud of all those who have been involved in this process.”
