Sandy Lake Evacuees Well Received In Wawa

WAWA, ON,f – Originally scheduled to be flown in from the central hub in Thunder Bay Ontario evacuees from Sandy Lake First Nation arrived in Wawa at approximately 4:00 am this morning by bus.

Mayor Linda Nowicki stated that “the fog in Wawa last evening was too thick for air flights and so a decision was made in Thunder Bay to bus the evacuees to Wawa. This did require some juggling of schedules and as a result their arrival was later than expected”.

Wawa’s Community Control Group has been in “high gear” mobilizing resources and the response from volunteers and the community has been tremendous.

Wawa has accepted almost 150 evacuees and they have been placed in various motels around the community. A transportation services has been set up and the Municipality of Wawa has responded with the creation of recreational programming while the Wawa Public Library has opened its doors as the Wawa CAP (Community Access Program) Site and for children’s programming.
