$2,000 In Fines For Shooting From A Boat

Two southern Ontario residents have been fined a total of $2,000 for firing their guns from a boat.

Ryan Shevalier of Orillia and Jacob McCann of Orangeville were both convicted of discharging a firearm from a boat. Shevalier was fined $1,200 and McCann was fined $800. Shevalier also received a one-year hunting suspension.

The court heard that Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers conducted an investigation based on information posted on a hunting forum website. Shevalier and McCann admitted to the officers that on September 19, 2009, the opening day of moose hunting season, they both shot at a bull moose from a motorboat on the Ogoki River, 90 kilometres northwest of Nakina. The men later killed the moose.

Justice of the Peace Marcel Donio heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Geraldton, on June 28, 2011

The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to discharge a firearm from a motorboat. Such actions are hazardous and have led to injuries and fatalities.
