Grit, Determination And Hard Fought Battles Define Day One Of The NSSSAA Championship

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Day one of the 2011 NSSSAA Championship was a day filled with tight competition and hard fought battles up and down the basketball court.

On the junior side, the Ecole Secondaire Trillium Coyotes displayed a great deal of grit and determination, in a 19-17 victory over Nipigon-Red Rock. The team of the day however was the Chevaliers of Ecole Secondaire St. Joseph. This aggressive young squad dominated the tournament with a 51-16 win over Nipigon-Red Rock and a 28-12 win over Ecole Secondaire Trillium.

The St. Joseph Chevaliers effort earned the school its first ever NSSSAA title. Congratulations girls!

The senior division saw the Hornepayne Hawks, Nipigon-Red Rock and Marathon Falcons face off. Nipigon-Red Rock slipped past Hornepayne in the first game of the day, 33-32. The Marathon Falcons took a 40-27 victory over Nipigon-Red Rock in the second match-up of the day. The Hornepayne Hawks fought hard against the Falcons in the final game and came close to forcing a tie-breaking round, but the Falcons slipped past the Hawks led by a strong effort of #15, Kayla O’Hara.

The victorious Falcons will move on to the NWOSSAA Championship next week in Kenora. Good luck girls!

Even An Early Winter Storm Couldn’t Cool Down The Heat  At Day 2 Of The NSSSAA Championship

Not even closed highways, heavy snow and freezing rain could deter teams from across NSSSAA from travelling to Manitouwadge for the Boys Volleyball Championship.

The weather may have been cold outside as winter descended on the NSSSAA region, but inside the Manitouwadge gym outstanding volleyball was causing a heat wave.The junior boys volleyball championship was a hard fought battle between Geraldton, Hornepayne and Manitouwadge. In the first match-up, the smooth passing Jr. Manitouwadge Wolverines managed to bump their way past a hard hitting Geraldton Knights 25-19, 25-16.In a battle of the hitters, the Jr. Hornepayne Hawks and Geraldton Knights matched hit for hit in a closely fought match that eventually saw Hornepayne finish off its first opponent 25-23, 25-16.The match of the day however was between the Jr. Wolverines and the Jr. Hawks. Manitouwadge drew first blood with a 25-22 victory. The Hornepayne squad responded with an impressive offensive attack in the second set to win 25-14. Both junior teams fought hard in the third set but in the end the Hornepayne Hawks pulled out a 15-13 victory and in the process became this year’s Junior Boys Volleyball Champions.

On the senior side, a hard hitting Manitouwadge team pounded the competition with round robin victories over Chapleau Raiders 25-10, 25-1, and the Lake Superior Stingers 25-6, 25-10.Chapleau and Lake Superior rebounded and fought a gritty head to head battle to earn a birth in the championship game.The  Lake Superior seniors eventually came out on top 25-20, 25-23In the championship match Manitouwadge secured the NSSSAA Championship and entry into the NWOSSAA championship with decisive 25-8, 25-13 victory over the Stingers.
