Learning Global Awareness – St. Martin Students Buy a Farmyard of Animals

TERRACE BAY, ON – Through Catholic Education within our schools, the students and staff are continually called to be witnesses to their faith. Students are encouraged to share and proclaim the Good News through their words and actions on a daily basis. As Christians and Catholics, we are always being called to serve.

“We are made for service, to care for each other, we are made to love each sister and brother with love that will last”.

(“Service” by Buddy Ceasar.)

During the 2010-2011, the JK/SK class of Mrs. Brosseau and the Grade 7/8 class of Mrs. Godin, in conjunction with student council,  teamed up to answer their call for service by putting their faith into action through joint initiatives.  Collaboratively, the students fundraised to collect funds to obtain a farm yard of animals for a needy village through Chalice Community Projects.  Chalice (see links/more info below) is a prayer-based community helping to bring Christ to those who hunger and thirst physically or spiritually. Chalice’s work around the world supports over 45,000 children and aging in 15 countries. Chalice’s mission is to create and nurture caring relationships of life and love wherever we serve and is sustained through prayer.

JK/SK and Grade 7/8 classrooms which participated were seeing the meaning of stewardship and caring for each other – an important life lesson.  The project assisted St. Martin students in living their faith through their actions, as well as becoming aware that they are part of a larger , global community on which they can have profound positive impact.  Therefore, through the goodness of God, St. Martin School was able to submit this cheque to Chalice Community projects to purchase a farmyard for a village in need.

CHALICE ‘s mission is to create and nurture caring relationships of life and love wherever we serve and is sustained through prayer. Through partnerships with religious communities and lay people, Chalice provides nourishing food, medical and dental care, clothing and the opportunity to go to school. Sponsorship offers a relationship of nurturing and prayer which fills the most essential human need: the knowledge that someone loves and cares for them. Through careful attention to program expenses and by keeping administration costs to a minimum Chalice sends 87% of all money donated directly to our sponsor sites.

Above all, Chalice seeks to share Christ with those most in need. With a sense of gratitude, we seek to be an instrument through which our donors and sponsors can express their faith and love for God and neighbour through actions and through prayer.

CHALICE COMMUNITY PROJECTS main goal is for Chalice to support projects funded by those interested in supporting sustainable community-based development initiatives. The CPPs are organized in four different categories namely Education, Water and Nutrition, Health and Sanitation and Community Improvement.
