Gravelle announces grants to Red Rock and Lakehead Region Conservation Authority

Ontario Helps Protect Lake Superior
Ontario is helping the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority and the Town of Red Rock to protect Lake Superior through grants from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund,
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority will receive $22,085 to create a historical, interpretive exhibit to show the evolution of the Mission Island marsh, and to clean up and plant native vegetation along the Lake Superior shore.
A $25,000 grant will be used by the Town of Red Rock to create an interactive exhibit with an educational video on Lake Superior at the Red Rock Marina Interpretive Centre. The interpretive exhibit will showcase Lake Superior’s:
- biodiversity
- fish habitat
- invasive species
to educate visitors on Lake Superior and stress the importance of individual stewardship of the Lake. Red Rock Mayor Gary Nelson is looking forward to the project being an integral part of the Red Rock Interpretive Centre“This grant will help provide educational opportunities on the sustainability of the Great Lakes.” said Nelson.
The Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund helps grassroots community groups, non-profit organizations and First Nations and Métis communities restore the lakes and their tributaries through local actions such as cleaning up shorelines and protecting and restoring wetlands.
Protecting and restoring the Great Lakes is part of our government’s plan to enhance quality of life for Ontario families and ensure a strong, green economy for future generations.
“The LRCA is excited to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Mission Island Conservation Area located adjacent to a coastal wetland on Lake Superior.
