LIFE AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC SCHOOL

MANITOUWADGE, ON –  As part of their Science curriculum, the Structures and Mechanisms  unit,  Mrs. Gillman’s grade five students designed and constructed  an “Egg Protector”.  These constructions were built to be attractive, economically   feasible and had to protect a raw egg from breaking when dropped  from  a height of two metres.

Students successfully dropped their Egg Protectors from two metres then proceeded to further experiment by dropping them from the second story window of the school, approximately four metres. All but one egg survived the fall!   Mrs. Gillman is still waiting for permission to drop the egg protectors from the roof top of the school gymnasium!  In the meantime, (this could take a very long time!)  students compared their Egg Protectors to protective sports equipment and how helmets, elbow pads, and shin guards protect parts of their bodies from impact of forces.
