McGuinty Government Recognizes Achievements in Amateur Sport

Ontario honours some of the province’s top athletes and coaches for their outstanding achievements in amateur sport in 2011.

Of the 33 finalists for this year’s Ontario Sport Awards, the following athletes received the top honours in a ceremony last night:

  • Male Athlete of the Year — Patrick Chan (Figure Skating)
  • Female Athlete of the Year — Whitney McClintock (Water Ski)
  • Male Athlete with a Disability of the Year — Mark Ledo (Para-cycling)
  • Female Athlete with a Disability of the Year — Robbi Weldon (Para-cycling)
  • Team of the Year — Victoria Altomare and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Volleyball)

The awards recognize the outstanding contributions that Ontario athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and corporate supporters make to amateur sport.

Ontario’s athletes and coaches will have the opportunity to shine this summer at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, England. Ontarians will also have the opportunity to cheer on some of these honoured coaches and athletes as members of Team Canada when the Greater Golden Horseshoe plays host to the highly anticipated 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games.

QUICK FACTS

  • Established in 1965, the Ontario Sport Awards marks its 46th year honouring outstanding achievements in Ontario amateur sport. It is the highest recognition for sport excellence in the province.
  • Finalists are nominated by their Provincial/Multi Sport Organization. Winners are chosen by the Sport Awards Selection Committee, a group comprised of former athletes and sport administrators from Ontario.
  • Previous recipients include Heather Moyse, Richard Ball, Priscilla Lopes-Schlieppe, Eric Lamaze, Donovan Bailey, Silken Laumann and Lennox Lewis.
  • Ontario athletes captured half of Canada’s 182 medals at the 2011 Pan/Parapan American Games.
  • The 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games will create 15,000 jobs, build new and improve sport infrastructure, attract 250,000 visitors and welcome 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials.
