Catholic Education Week at St. Hilary’s

St. Hilary School News

Catholic Education Week at St. Hilary’s in Red Rock has concluded for another year. The activities and special events were numerous and varied! We began with a prayer service and blessing with Deacon Leo Marchand on Monday and followed through with our Annual Speech Arts Presentations and ACE   Awards  assembly. Student winners who went to Schreiber for the district speech arts competition were: Noah Sands, Primary; Deon Paul, Junior; and Andrea Zapcic, Intermediate. Andrea and Noah won the district first prize for their respective grades, and all who participated at the school and district level, represented their classes and their school proudly!! Special thanks to all who helped in various ways, especially teacher, Trish Allaire, who organized the event and Mrs. Zapcic and Sands who drove the winners to Schreiber.

Monthly Mass at the church was celebrated on Wednesday. Each day we reflected on the theme Catholic Education: Celebrating the Spirit. Monday our focus was on the spirit of Hospitality;

  • Tuesday-Understanding
  • Wednesday-Wisdom
  • Thursday-Justice
  • Friday-Gratitude.

Mrs. Richard read a short prayer or scripture passage to start the day each morning.  All staff participated in the MAGU Activities and crafts on Friday afternoon. From soccer stations to yummy smoothies and videos, crafts, and charades, a great time was had by all. Students were paired up in teams representing Jk-8 in each team.

Thursday, the grade 5/6 with Mrs. Richard enjoyed a world class luncheon. In April they completed a unit on researching several countries around the world and each student, along with the teacher was responsible to cook/bake a dish relevant to the cuisine of the country they researched. The dinner included dishes from Germany, Japan, China , Australia, and USA. Some of the dishes were prepared and served on another day. We may possibly have some of the students opening their own restaurants in future years!

While on the topic of cooking, the grade ½ class and Mrs. LeBlanc made delicious Bannock and served it up with tasty jam. They also wrote a book about the recipe and their experience, keeping in line with Aboriginal and Metis Roots/History. Each class will be compiling ideas and information under this heading and producing class books.
