HIGHWAY 11/17 ROAD CLOSURES IN THE THUNDER BAY AREA – UPDATE

THUNDER BAY, ON  — The Ministry of Transportation wishes to advise the motoring public that due to recent heavy rainfall in the Thunder Bay area, there are a number of closures on Highway 11/17. 

Washouts on provincial highways have occurred at the following locations:

  • Highway 11/17 west of Kakabeka Falls, between Hume Road and Spruce Grove Lane –washout at culvert, repairs will commence as water level recedes
  • Highway 11/17 west of Vibert Road – washout at culvert, repairs will commence as water level recedes
  • Highway 11/17 east of Twin City Crossroad – 150 metres of shoulder washed away, backfilling is underway, shoulder may be restored by the end of the day
  • Highway 642 east of Highway 516 intersection – major washout, damage will be assessed and repairs commenced as water levels recede

For east west traffic, Highway 102 is operating normally at this point.

A number of roads within Local Roads Board (LRB) areas have been affected as well.

  • Portage Creek Road, at the first bridge, remains closed
  • Laukka Lane at Auto Road – repairs will be underway once water levels recede

Safety is our top priority and repairs are underway.  MTO staff and contractors are currently assessing the damage at each location. Repairs are underway.  We will continue to monitor water levels throughout the area and make necessary repairs.
