Life at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School

THUNDER BAY, ON – June 7th, Grades 5 & 6 students with their teachers and chaperones, including Principal Diane Nelson, departed to experience an amazing hands-on  learning opportunity at Fort William Historical Park.

For 24 hours, the group took a trip back in time to the year 1815 to re-live  a day in the life of the voyageurs.  The students, dressed in voyageur attire, were divided into two brigades.  Each brigade was led by a highly competent guide, provided by the park, who took them on a tour of the Fort, explaining the lifestyles and historical events of that era, while entertaining them to ensure their full participation.

The students delighted in the games, the dance and the drama, enjoying meals and snacks, typical of the time.  On the way back from Thunder Bay, our “Voyageurs” became “Miners” with a stop at Northwestern Ontario’s famous Amethyst Mine Panorama; a fully interactive mine where visitors can use their bucket and pic to collect real amethyst samples and then rinse them on huge outdoor counter tops made especially for the task.  In spite of the rain, our young miners persisted and came back with treasures of amethyst to take home.

This was a most memorable out-of-school learning experience that the students will no doubt keep as a treasured memory of their elementary school years.
