Great News for Manitouwadge as MHS Teaching Staff of 12+ Announced

Manitouwadge High School is a very modern building whose current students population is approximately 1/3 of it's potential maximum capacity.

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Manitouwadge High School announced to parents and guardians of students today that the  Superior-Greenstone District School Board has increased teaching staff to bring the number of teachers on staff up to 12.67. The Superior Greenstone DSB had promised this increase at their regular videoconferenced board meeting in May when a motion was passed, in front of a Manitouwadge audience of approximately 150 concerned students, parents and residents,  cutting 3+ teachers to leave less than 10 for the estimated 100 students expected in September 2012.

This is great news not only for the teachers and students who were looking at loosing up to 20 courses if the cuts had stuck, but also for the community as a whole.  There were concerns that parents of MHS students who work outside Manitouwadge and chose to live in the community, in spite of it resulting in their loosing 1-2 days of their regular time off to travelling from their jobs, would relocate to communities nearer their jobs where their children could have more course options, or that would-be residents might overlook Manitouwadge as a place to live if the high school did not have reasonable course options if the May 22nd teacher cuts had remained in place.

As a result of the teaching staff numbers being restored, the September 2012 timetable was redone and new course option sheets will be provided to enrolled students to complete.  Grade 9 and 10 students will be offered separate classes for the academic and applied streams as well as more options in grades 11 and 12 though these latter were not specified in today’s announcement.

MHS staff has stressed that these new option sheets must be completed and returned to the school office by June 25, less than a week from today, to ensure students schedules can be organized for their return in September. Though this is short notice no one seems to be complaining as students, parents just pleased to have their students returning to the same quality of education they have become accustomed to at MHS.
