Nip-Rock High School 7-12 Committee Recommendations Receive Opposition (incl. video footage of mtg)

At the Superior-Greenstone District School Board’s regular meeting, May 22, 2012,  the Nipigon Red Rock District High School 7-12 Advisory Committee representatives; Dorion Public School Parent Council’s Kitty Dumonski, and George O’Neil (Nipigon) Public School Parent Council’s Kelly Mangoff, presented the group’s recommendations to the board.

A motion was passed to accept their recommendations as read but not before Nipigon Trustee Bette Bartlett, who had not been a member of the Advisory Committee, presented her, very clearly voiced, opposition to a potential Grade 7-12 inclusion at Nipigon Red Rock District High School. Among those questions asked by Bartlett, the one that seemed to receive the strongest reaction from those in attendance at the video conference in Manitouwadge where this footage was recorded, was

‘Why, if a 7-12 model is ideal, why not put it in place in Marathon where no out-of-town or highway busing would be required for any students elementary or high school?’

The Superior-Greenstone District School Board’s answer to this question. if there is one to come, remains to be heard.

When the motion was passed, Bartlett asked that the vote be recorded and, when following this request, board member’s names were not called out in turn to hear their vote, there was very heated debate regarding the board policy in regards to the process of recorded voting and though the Chair assured those questioning how it had been done.  The 7-12 Advisory Committee’s recommendation presentation and subsequent public comment, Trustee opposition address, and vote was wrapped up with Trutee Bartlett filing a Minority Report.

Hear all of this in detail as it was recorded from Manitouwadge High School Auditorium where approximately 130 people were in audience to watch the Board meeting which was broadcast, live, via video conference courtesy of the SGDSB by clicking PLAY on the video above.
