Northwest Region Fire Situation Update

Due too over 15,000 lightning strikes over the long weekend, 10 new Fires were reported in the Northwest region by 4:30pm Tuesday.  Bringing the total number of active fires to 15.

The Kenora district saw the most action today with 4 new fires being detected. Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, and Dryden all had one new fire.

With the hot dry weather continuing tomorrow, more holdover lightning fires are expected to be discovered across the region. FireRangers and Aircrafts will remain on high alert. 

  • Sioux Lookout continues to have 6 fires in the far north which are being monitored. 
  • The Nipigon District continues to battle its 4.8 hectare blazes located just north of Ogoki River Provincial Park.

Monday, July 2nd, Thunder Bay District Fire 25 started 2.5 Kilometers south of Dog Lake. Quick action by Fire Crews and Air Attack quickly brought the fire under control. The Fire was burning in a year old cutover and reached a size of 1.1 Hectares. As of noon today, that Fire is under control.

The forest fire hazard is Moderate to high across the whole region. Continued nice weather will keep this hazard up. People are reminded that they are responsible for any outdoor fire. The requirements for safe management of outdoor fires can be found at www.ontario.ca/fireprevention.
